If you look in the dictionary, the
definition of advent is "coming into place or view"
or
"anticipated arrival." It isn't just a religious word,
but it is the perfect word for the first 'season' of the
church year. There is a difference between the calendar year and the church year. The
calendar year always starts on January 1st, no matter on
what day of the week it falls. The church year begins
four Sundays before Christmas, and the actual date changes
every year.. This year, the first
Sunday of Advent is on November 28th.
Advent helps us focus our attention
as Christmas approaches. It is a time to think about the Old
Testament prophecies of a Messiah, to meet Mary and Joseph,
and to understand how important Jesus is to our relationship
with God the Father.
God gives us the greatest gift of salvation
through his Son, Jesus, but we can give, too. Our
gifts can reflect God's love and tolerance. We all look
forward to opening the presents wrapped and put under the
Christmas tree. God is happiest when we offer gifts
of help, kindness and thoughtfulness to those around us.
Advent is a wonderful, happy, time
of year!
