Seminary students were 'encouraged' to visit Norwegian pioneer communities during their summer vacation, to provide ministry and to encourage the establishment of new Norwegian Lutheran Churches.  This may explain Hagboe's involvement with the settlers along the Buffalo River prior to his ordination.  He is also credited with establishing the first church in Norman County at Maple River in 1872.

B L Hagboe was born April 2, 1845.  He married, had children, and remained in Barton ND until his death May 27, 1934.
