WHAT YOU NEED

• Ark pattern

• White cardstock                                                                                      

• 7" x 7" piece of corrugated cardboard

• 4 bottle caps

• sand paper

• 12 small rocks

• 4 blue pipe cleaners

• Blue crepe paper

• Five 4 1/2" craft (popsicle) sticks

                                            plus

• scissors
• craft scissors
• glue, glue gun, and/or double-stick tape
• crayons

 1. Print ark pattern on white cardstock. Color both of the arks.  (Remember, the ark of the covenant was made of gold!) Cut out each ark.

 2. Glue a craft stick onto on the backside of one of the arks.  Then carefully cover the stick and back of the ark with the other ark and glue together (or use double-sided tape). (In the sample above, the craft stick is crooked and that's a mistake!)

 3.  Cut a 4 1/2" slit down the middle of the cardboard starting 1/2" from one end.  The slit should be wide enough for a craft stick to slide through.

  4. Cut a small square 2 1/2" from the edge of the slit and 1" from from the end of the cardboard.  The square should be just big enough for a craft stick to rotate inside it.

  5. Glue the 4 bottle caps ("legs") onto the bottom of the cardboard.  Two of the caps should be placed as close to the square holes as possible.  They will help support the river as it opens.

 6. Glue two craft sticks together to form an "L" shape.  You will use them in step 9. 

  7. Flip the cardboard over.  Glue or tape a piece of sandpaper onto the top of the cardboard.  Carefully cut the middle slit from the sandpaper.  Do not cut the two squares, just put a slit in them. This will help support the river as it opens.

 8. Glue the 12 small stones around the middle slit. These represent the 12 stones collected by the tribes.

 9. Bend the pipecleaners as shown in the picture above.  Cut strips of crepe paper to fit the pipecleaners. Use craft scissors to create "waves" at the top of the paper.  Use double-stick tape to attach the crepe paper to the pipecleaners.

10. Slide the top of an "L" shaped craft stick through the hole on each side of the center slit. Decide how you want 2 of the crepe/pipe cleaners arranged on each stick and glue them into place.  In the closed position, they represent the River Jordan.

11. Place the ark into the middle slit in front of the water. 

12.  Now you are ready to tell the story! Carefully push the ark back.  The river opens and the rocks on the sandy bottom are revealed!
